It Takes a Village: The Editor-Author Collaboration (Conference Session)

In this session, Asata Radcliffe (editor) & Margarita Barresi (author) will discuss the importance of the author-editor collaboration–the creative partnership that is the bridge to a published book. Reflecting on their journey together that led to the final outcome of Margarita's first book, A Delicate Marriage, this discussion will address the question: How can the author and editor center the voice in the work together? They will also discuss the importance of how having the right editor-author pairing is vital when addressing themes that have a larger cultural context. This session will have a Q&A, and audience participation is invited.

Join me for a presentation about how writers make a novel’s setting feel like a character, using my historical novel A Delicate Marriage as an example. A Delicate Marriage is set in 1930s to 1950s Puerto Rico, a turbulent time in the island’s history. The book’s sense of place is integral to the story, which illustrates how decisions made in the first half of the twentieth century continue to have repercussions today.

José C. Massó III interviews author Margarita Barresi about her historical fiction debut novel, A Delicate Marriage, set in 1930s to 1950s Puerto Rico. From glittering ballrooms to verdant mountains to poverty-stricken slums, A Delicate Marriage takes the reader on a vivid tour of Puerto Rico forty years after becoming a U.S. colony, a time of great change and political turmoil on the island. The novel is loosely based on the story of Barresi's grandparents.

Massó and Barresi will discuss her book and how becoming a U.S. colony impacted the island, its people, and its politics during the time period of the novel through the present day. Following the talk, there will be time for audience Q&A. A book signing will follow the program.

Icelandic Christmas Book Flood Wenham, MA

I’ll be joining local authors at the first-ever Wenham Museum’s Jolabokaflod, or Icelandic Christmas Book Flood, on December 10! Jolabokaflod is a tradition that started during World War II when paper was not rationed and giving books as gifts became a tradition. Icelanders read their new books on Christmas Eve while sipping hot chocolate. Stock up on books for Christmas gifts at this event.
